Arab-Americans Urge US to Cease Arms Sales to Israel

The Arab-American Institute, an organization of prominent Arab-Americans, on Thursday urged the Bush administration to cease arms sales to Israel after Israeli army used advanced US-made arms to attack the Palestinians.

"We believe that in light of Israel's misuse of TOW missiles, the US ought to conclude its investigation immediately and suspend further shipment of materials being used in violation of the law and contrary to our national interest," the institute said in a letter to US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

"We urge President Bush and Secretary Powell to implement US law -- namely the US Arms Export Control Act," institute president James Zogby said in a statement.

"When Israel misuses US weaponry then we have a moral obligation to stop the supply of that weaponry," Zogby said.

Thrusting into Palestinian-ruled territory on Wednesday, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians and wounded 25 others in a tank-led assault on a Gaza Strip refugee camp.

An Israeli military official said it was the largest Israeli force to go into a Palestinian-controlled area to demolish homes and olive groves since the start of the Palestinian uprising last September.
