FISU Chief: Games in Beijing to Help Olympics to Asia

President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) George E. Killian said Thursday that if Beijing wins the bid for 2008 Olympic Games will be good for Olympic spirits to come to Asia.

"I sincerely hope that Beijing would win the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, because I think it will be good for Olympics to come to Asia." said Killian, who is on a three-day inspection of the city's preparation for the 21th World University Games here in August.

"The Olympic Games have been in Europe for the past eight to twelve years, it is time to go somewhere else." said Killian.

In the meeting with Beijing Mayor Liu Qi this evening, Killian also expressed his good will to Beijing.

"For the past eight or nine months, I have been introducing Beijing to my friends in the international Olympic family. A lot of people hope the Games could come to Asia and China." he added.

Killian is on his three-day inspection tour in Beijing along with the Supervision Committee of FISU.

FISU Supervision Committee Begins Inspection Tour

The Supervision Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) began its three- day inspection tour in Beijing on Thursday.

Headed by FISU president George E. Killian, the Supervision Committee inspected the competing venues including the Capital gymnasium which will host the competition of basketball, volleyball and gymnastics.

After reviewing the under-constructed natatorium and basketball gymnasium of Tsinghua University , Killian expressed his satisfaction of the preparation, said, "It is unbelievable, I didn 't think that Beijing would have such a beautiful building in the campus."

"It is extremely impressive what we have seen this afternoon. We will have the biggest Universiade that we have ever seen." said Roch Compana, Secretary General of FISU.
