Top Lawmaker on Supervision Law

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, highlighted the supervisory role of China's legislature during a recent study tour of eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

The supervisory role by the people's congress over governments, courts and procuratorates, at different levels, is granted by the Constitution, he stressed.

During the trip, the top legislator presided over a forum to hear opinions and discuss relevant issues concerning the supervisory work of the local legislature, including the drafting of a supervision law.

Along with the forming of a socialist legal system, the creating of a supervision law has been an imperative task to further strengthen and regularize the supervisory work of the people's congresses at all levels, the NPC chairman said.

According to official sources, the Ninth NPC, which held its first session in 1998, has received 33 proposals from deputies calling for the promulgation of a supervision law.

During his stay in Zhejiang, Li also visited the provincial power company to look into the reform of the power industry. The reform will be helpful in creating competition among power plants and boosting the development of the power industry, he noted.
