Premier Makes Study Tour to South China

During a recent study trip in Hunan Province, Premier Zhu Rongji urged local people to make a good beginning in implementing the new five-year plan by restructuring the economy in line with market law.

From April 5 to 11, the premier visited local villages, schools and factories in the Xiangxi Tu and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and Zhangjiajie, Huaihua, Loudi and Changsha cities, all in Hunan Province.

In his talks with local officials, Zhu praised the provincial government for its achievements in recent years and said that the key to the local economy entering a new period of development is making great efforts in restructuring local industries by paying more attention to economic returns.

The premier criticized those officials who like to interfere in economic issues with administrative powers and neglect the market law.

He said the growth of development zones should be carried out in a planned and practical manner.

The restructuring of agriculture must be put on top of the government agenda so as to improve the quality and performance of the sector as a whole, Zhu said.

In his talks, the premier also stressed the importance of correctly handling the relationship between reform, development and stability.
