Tibetan Delegation in France for Cultural Exchanges

A Tibetan delegation from China on Wednesday held a photo exhibition in Paris on Tibet's religion, history and economic status quo.

Hundreds of people arrived for the exposition, where dozens of photos, piles of documents and a video program entitled "Tibet Today" were shown.

Tsering Drolkar, Vice Chairwoman of Tibet Autonomous Region and head of the delegation, gave a lecture on Chinese government's policy of development in the Tibet region.

"We were born in Tibet. We grew up in Tibet. We live and work in Tibet," said Tsering.

The Tibetan people have made great achievements in economy, education and culture since its peaceful liberation 50 years ago, she said, adding that there are now more than 3,600 schools in the region and 81.4 percent of the Tibetan children have access to schooling.

"I was once a girl slave. Only after the peaceful liberation of Tibet had I got access to education. Now I am a good doctor and I proudly and happily tell you that my children are university graduates and all my grandchildren go to school," she said.

Drubkang Tubdenkedrup, a Living Buddha from Tibet's Sherteng Temple, was also present at the photo exposition.

Religions are respected and protected in Tibet with believers and non-believers treated equal, he said.

"Anyone who reads the history of Tibet will know that ever since the 13th century, or the Yuan Dynasty, Tibet has been governed by the central government of China, "said Joseph Marchisio, Honorary President and one of the founders of the Federation of French-Chinese Friendship.

"Certain elements in the West hold a wrong idea about Tibet. They should read more of the Tibetan history, especially the part of its slavery regime (before 1949)," he added.

The delegation arrived in Paris for a four-day visit on Sunday after one-week cultural exchanges in Stockholm with Swedish Tibetan scholars and meetings with Swedish politicians.

A seminar between the delegation and French scholars and researchers on Tibetan studies was also held in Paris on Tuesday.
