Chief of General Staff Meets Turkish Guests

Fu Quanyou, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, said Wednesday that the United States bears full responsibility for the recent collision between a US reconnaissance plane and a Chinese fighter jet.

Fu, also a member of the Central Military Commission, told visiting Turkish navy command Ilhami Erdil that the U.S. should apologize to the Chinese people and in that vein do something that benefits Sino-US relations.

On Sino-Turkish relations, Fu said that China and Turkey have enjoyed long-term friendship, and since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1971, the bilateral relations have maintained good momentum for development. Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Turkey last April further promoted the relations, he added.

Fu noted that China and Turkey have also enjoyed sound cooperation in the military field, and voiced the belief that the exchanges between the two armed forces will develop in an all- round way.

Fu expressed gratitude for the Turkish government's adherence to the one-China principle.

Erdil said that the relations between Turkey and China have developed smoothly in recent years, and Turkey is ready to boost cooperation with China in the political, economic and military fields.
