China's EMS Welcomes UPS Direct Air Route to China

An official from the State Post Bureau said that China's Express Mail Service(EMS) welcomes the opening of a direct air route to China by the United Parcel Service (UPS).

The direct air route will facilitate economic exchange between the two countries, said the official, adding that the EMS, as a major player in China's parcel service market, welcomes every step forward in this regard.

Commenting on the UPS's winning of the direct route to China, the official said that China will see fiercer competition in the parcel service market after it enters the World Trade Organization. China EMS is now deliberating ways to provide better service to improve its competitive edge.

"China's EMS is not afraid of competition," said the official. "Any company that lags behind will be hit by rivals."

China accelerated its ordinary mail service in 2000 and plans to speed up its EMS this year. To do this, China Post opened five new posting air routes March 28 and set up a rapid-mail network with Shanghai as the center.

The official said that China's EMS has its own advantages in competition, such as the largest mailing network in the country, more than 20 years' of experience and a deeper understanding of China's culture, clients' demand and related policies.

He cited low efficiency and poor competitive skills as drawbacks hindering the rapid development of the EMS. China's EMS, as a part of China Post, has to take the responsibility of universal service of the China Post, he added.

In the past 20 years, the EMS has maintained an annual growth rate of 30 percent in its business volume and income. In 2000, the company registered income of 4.3 billion yuan. The figure is expected to reach five billion yuan this year.
