US Obstructing Beijing's Olympic Bid Is Challenge to Human Rights Principles: Yang JiechiAs it is reported by Fox News, Yang Jiechi, Chinese Ambassador to the United States wrote to US senate on April 9 (local time), protesting its intervention and obstruction in China's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, and expressing the hope that the United States will veto any related measures against Beijing's bid.In his letter, Yang told the congressmen who are against Beijing's bid that their actions have overstepped the limit of their function and power due to them. He added that the authority to judge whether a city is qualified for hosting the Olympic Games rests entirely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which has, and only it has, the final right to decide the matter. No individual or institution has the right to exert influence on IOC. However, Yang pointed out, the US Congress risked everyone's condemnation and brazenly passed the proposal against China's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games in defiance of the world people's opposition. Yang thought US has not only interfered in China's internal affairs, but also meddled in the right of the I0C. Their proposal has violated the spirit initiated by the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games spirit forbids any discrimination against a certain country or individual in the name of race, religion, politics, sex or any other pretext. US Congress, under the signboard of human rights, obstructed Beijing's bid for the Olympic Games and China's effort to make contribution to the international Olympic Games and the peace and development of the world. Their behaviors are entirely incompatible with the spirit of the Olympic Games. Ambassador Yang also emphasized that Beijing's bid for the Olympic Games is strongly supported by the 1.25 billion Chinese people including 12 million Beijingers and residents in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Any attempt to deprive China of the right for the bid constitutes challenge to the universally recognized human right principle and will definitely meet with the strong opposition from the Chinese people and all the righteous people across the world. In conclusion, the Ambassador said, "I believe the letter will help you understand the problem." By PD Online Staff Du Minghua |
