Netherlands Offer Money for Study on Refloating Russian Submarine

The Netherlands has offered Russia 250,000 dollars (280,000 euros) for a feasibility study on refloating its sunken nuclear submarine, the Kursk, the Russian foreign ministry said Monday.

"The Netherlands have actively demonstrated its interest in cooperating with Russia to refloat the Kursk in the summer of 2001," the Interfax news agency quoted spokesman Alexander Yakovenko as saying.

The Kursk, Russia's most modern nuclear submarine, sank on August 12 following a number of still-unexplained powerful explosions on board, killing all 118 sailors on the vessel.
