Crackdown on Gang Crimes Urged

State Councilor Luo Gan, a top official in charge of security affairs in China, has pledged to raise the nationwide "Strike-Hard" campaign to a higher level by focusing on a crackdown on mafia-style gang crimes.

Speaking at a national teleconference on the "Strike-Hard" drive held by the Ministry of Public Security Tuesday, he urged public security departments throughout the country to firmly implement the essence of the recent national conference on social security and realize the goal of improving public security.

Luo is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Committee of Political Science and Law under the CPC Central Committee.

Since last December, public security forces have joined hands with procuratorates and courts to launch a special campaign against organized crime, resulting in the uncovering of a large number of group crime cases, the destruction of mafia-style gangs, and the punishment of a group of mafia members, according to the official.

Currently, the number of crimes, including explosion, murder, robbery and kidnapping as a whole is on the rise and in some places, criminal activities of mafia-like groups are rampant, he noted.

The Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuratorate should work out a list of mafia-like groups that are under the protection of "umbrellas", Luo said.

The state councilor called on the mass media and the public to expose criminal organizations. Efforts should be made to crack down on severe crimes that seriously threaten people's lives, he added.
