Sino-ASEAN Symposium on Information, Telecom

The three-day Sino-ASEAN symposium on information and telecommunications technology opened Tuesday in Shenzhen, one of China's five special economic zones.

The symposium was arranged following the call made late last year by Premier Zhu Rongji for closer China-ASEAN cooperation in high-tech fields.

Chinese Vice Premier Wu Bangguo sent a congratulatory message of mark the opening of the symposium.

Attending the symposium are more than 40 representatives from Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, the Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore, including high-ranking officials in charge of information and telecom business, and corporate administrative personnel, as well as a 60-member Chinese team led by Wu Jichuan, minister of information industry.

In his address at the opening ceremony, the Chinese minister pledged to step up negotiations in information and telecom with governments of ASEAN member states, and to encourage Chinese companies to conduct exchanges with their counterparts of ASEAN countries, especially in capital construction regarding information and telecom and high technology.

He also vowed to support the implementation of an e-ASEAN project and to increase cooperation with ASEAN in developing human resources in the field of information and telecom, such as using China's existing training bases to educate qualified information and telecom talents for ASEAN.

During the symposium, participants will carry out discussions on a wide range of topics, including the e-ASEAN framework, telecom networks and on-line administrative technology, third- generation digital mobile telecommunications, e-business, and new fields for cooperation between China and ASEAN.
