The Side Making Mistake in Collision Apologize: Laos

Laos hopes the US-Chinese military jet collision incident could be solved properly and believes the side that made mistake should apologize, Lao Foreign Minister Somsavat Lengsavad told Chinese media in an interview here Wednesday.

When asked about his opinion on China's demanding that the US side bear full responsibility for the incident and apologize to China, Somsavat said he believes that China's stance is based on the fact that China is a sovereign country and has the right to ask for apology from the one that violated its sovereignty.

Laos has been following closely the development of US-Chinese military jet collision incident, Somsavat said, adding that the incident shouldn't have happened under the current international circumstances.

It is known to all, he said, within the framework of ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) all members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as dialogue partners of the ARF such as China and the United States, have been working on the measures to build up mutual trust.

"The occurrence of such kind of incident is inappropriate," said Somsavat, who is also deputy prime minister.

A US EP-3 electronic surveillance plane bumped into a Chinese jet fighter near China's Hainan Island, causing the latter to crash into the South China Sea.

The Chinese government has made solemn representations with the US side, demanding that Washington bear full responsibility for the incident and apologize.
