China-Uruguay Relations Satisfactory, Jiang Says

President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday in Montevideo that his country values its relations with Uruguay and will make unremitting efforts to advance the existing friendly relations between them.

Jiang made the remarks at a banquet hosted by his Uruguayan counterpart Jorge Batlle.

In his speech, Batlle described Jiang's visit to Uruguay as an "important event," adding that China undoubtedly plays an ever important role in the world.

China and Uruguay have already established dialogue and cooperation, he said. "We are willing to deepen our relations and hope to advance such ties on the basis of enhanced mutual understanding for the benefits of the two peoples," he said.

Jiang said that political stability has been maintained in recent years in Uruguay, which has also scored achievements in its economic development and improved the people's living standard. Thanks to its diplomatic efforts, Uruguay increased its influence on the international arena, he said.

He also spoke highly of the development of bilateral ties. After the establishment of diplomatic ties, China and Uruguay maintained frequent high-level exchanges, strengthened economic and trade cooperation, increased scientific and cultural contacts, and maintained sound cooperation in international affairs, he said.

With concerted efforts, Jiang said, bilateral relations could see further development in the future.
