Deputy Interior Minister Shot Dead in Tajikistan

Tajikistan's deputy interior minister and former opposition leader Khabib Sanginov was shot dead early on Wednesday in the capital Dushanbe, a police source said.

Sanginov, 50, was appointed to his post in 1999 as a result of a 1997 peace agreement between the Central Asian state's government and the United Tajik Opposition that agreed to end five years of civil war and set up a coalition cabinet.

The source told the press Sanginov's car was riddled with bullets when the official was leaving for work from his house. He said Sanginov's driver and a bodyguard had also been shot dead. Another bodyguard was badly wounded.

The source said that according to preliminary information Sanginov was attacked by a group of three people dressed in sportswear.

Sources in other Tajik security agencies confirmed the killing, but there was no official statement.
