Chinese President Receives "Key to the City" of Montevideo

Chinese President Receives "Key to the City" of Montevideo
Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin received the "Key to the City" of Montevideo on Tuesday, an honor for distinguished guests who visit the capital of Uruguay.

Walter Morodo, president of the Montevideo parliament, spoke of the frequent exchanges between China and Uruguay in political, trade, cultural and other areas. "Hospitable Montevideo citizens will always open their hearts to Chinese guests," he said.

Mayor Mariano Arana said in his speech that although Uruguay and China were two distant nations with different cultural traditions, bilateral relations have witnessed smooth growth during the past 13 years, when the two countries first forged diplomatic ties. He also pledged to enhance cooperation with China's Tianjin, the sister city of Montevideo.

Jiang said in his reciprocal address that he was impressed by the hospitality of the Montevideo citizens.

Montevideo in its history made important contribution to the economic construction and social development of Uruguay, he said.

"I hope Montevideo will play a larger role in China-Uruguay friendship in the new century," he added.

Jiang arrived in Montevideo for a state visit after he concluded his visit to Argentina earlier today. After Uruguay, the third-leg of Jiang's Latin American tour, he will visit Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela.
