Cuba Announces Chinese President's State Visit

Cuba's government announced Tuesday that Chinese President Jiang Zemin will make a four-day state visit beginning Thursday.

All local media reported Chinese President Jiang's imminent visit to the island, which is at the invitation of Cuban President Fidel Castro.

President Jiang will participate in a wide range of activities, including official talks with his host Fidel Castro, and meetings with Cuban high officials, as well as visits to sites of economic, social and cultural interest.

"The visit is an expression of the common will to strengthen and widen the bonds of friendship that exist between the two countries," said the official announcement.

"At the same time, it will help promote the development of bilateral relations in different economic spheres, including commercial and collaborative."

President Jiang's current visit to Latin America includes visits to Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba and Venezuela, and Brazil.

This visit will be President Jiang's second visit to Cuba following one in November 1993.

Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said last week the Chinese President's visit to Cuba "is important for the island and serves as a symbol of good relationships between both countries, which have enjoyed positive developments."
