Sino-Brazilian Relations Excellent: Ambassador

Brazil's Ambassador to China, Alfonso Celso de Ouro Preto, said Tuesday in Brasilia at a press conference regarding Chinese President Jiang Zemin's forthcoming visit that relations between both countries are excellent.

Jiang Zemin will start his second visit to Brazil on Wednesday. "Brazil is the sole South American country that Jiang Zemin has visited twice," said the Ambassador.

According to the ambassador, trade relations between China and Brazil are "extraordinarily" well. He said Brazil's exports to China in 2000 grew by 62 percent compared to 1999, reaching 1.6 billion U.S. dollars, while imports from China came to 1.2 billion dollars, a 42 percent rise.

Ouro Preto said Sino-Brazilian cooperation in the space sector has achieved great success, with the launching of the first satellite for remote sensing of Earth's resources, and the development of another three satellites.

The ambassador said both countries want to extend the successful cooperation in space to other fields of scientific researches such as biotechnology and information technology.

The ambassador also said that both countries share the same visions regarding important global matters.

The ambassador said that during the visit, both presidents would hold talks regarding political and economic situations in Latin America and Asia, diversification of technological and scientific association, widening of bilateral economic and trade relations, and the tightening of cooperation in multilateral organizations.

A document distributed on Tuesday by Brazil's Foreign Ministry also said, "It's foreseeable that the meeting will be highly beneficial and serve to reaffirm the tight bonds joining the two most important developing countries in Latin America and Asia."
