China Unicom Starts CDMA Network

China Unicom's much-concerned CDMA (code division multiple access) project has entered into the state of implementation.

The company has issued invitation for bids for procurement of systems and equipment for its first-phase project.

World-renowned communications carriers like Nortel, Lucent, Motorola and Ericsson and domestic leading communications operators such as Datang, ZTC and Huawei all submitted tenders.

It is learnt the total capacity of the company's first-phase project of CDMA network will be 13.30 million.

China Unicom will fix the equipment supplier before the end of this month and complete delivery prior to the end of June.

The first-phase project is expected to be built up by the fourth quarter and put into operation before the year-end or early next year.

By the end of this year, the 133 network will cover 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, including 300 cities.
