Taiwan's Economic Growth to Be Further Readjusted DownwardTaiwan's overall economic growth is likely to be lowered further than the previous estimates, an official from Taiwan's "Council for Economic Planning and Development" (CEPD) said Tuesday, according to reports reaching here from Taipei.According to CEPD tallies, Taiwan enjoyed a trade surplus of US$3. 3 billion in the first quarter of this year. With the growth rate in private sector consumption dropping to 4 percent in the first quarter, the annual overall economic growth will have to be readjusted downward this year, said the official. The official forecast that the overall economic growth rate will not be as high as 5.25 percent for 2001. According to an estimate from Academia Sinica's Institute of Economics, Taiwan's Q-1 growth will be around three percent, while the Q-2 performance is expected to be no better. The economy is likely to bottom out from Q-3 but the subsequent jump will not be remarkable.
