China Calls on Israel to Create Good Atmosphere for Peace Talks

China Tuesday appealed to Israel to stop building hundreds of houses in two Jewish settlements on the West Bank so as to create a good atmosphere for peace talks between Israel and Palestine.

"The problem of Jewish settlements is one of the sensitive issues in the Israel-Palestine negotiations on the final status of Palestine," Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi told a regular press conference.

It is reported that the Israeli government approved construction of 708 apartments in two Jewish settlements on the West Bank. A reporter was seeking Sun's comments on this issue.

Sun replied, "We believe that under current circumstances, the practice of the Israeli side could only make the issue of Palestine more complex."
