1 Killed, 17 Wounded by Israeli Rocket Attacks on Palestinian Targets

Israeli army Tuesday morning fired rockets at the Palestinian naval headquarters and a military position in the Gaza Strip, killing one Palestinian police officer and wounding at least 17 others, Palestinian sources said.

The strike came apparently in retaliation for the three mortars fired by Palestinians into a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip earlier in the day, which caused no casualties.

Abdul Razeq Mujaed, commander of Palestinian forces in Gaza, condemned the strike as part of continued Israeli "tyrannical aggression" against the Palestinians.

Violence between the Palestinians and Israelis has been escalating despite efforts by both sides to resume security talks to reduce conflict which has raged the region for more than six months, killing more than 450 people, mostly Palestinians, and injuring thousands of others.

A high-level Israeli-Palestinian security meeting due to be held Monday evening at the Erez checkpoint between the Gaza Strip and Israel has been postponed.
