Foreigners Applying for Chinese Nationality Increase in Macao

The number of foreign people applying for or hoping to regain Chinese nationality has been increasing in the Macao special administrative region (SAR) since it returned to the motherland on December 20, 1999.

By the end of March, the Identification Bureau of the SAR government has received 245 applicants for Chinese nationality, latest sources said.

Included were 126 foreigners who applied for Chinese nationality for the first time and 86 people who wanted to regain the nationality. In addition, 19 Portuguese people born in Macao chose to join Chinese nationality.

The Identification Bureau is a special organ of the SAR government to handle nationality affairs.
