Chinese President Jiang Zemin in Buenos Aires Monday presented a wreath to the Jose San Martin Monument, paying his tribute to the Liberator of South America.

He said that Argentina was a major nation in Latin America. Bilateral exchanges and cooperation were expanded in political, economic, scientific and cultural areas, and the mutual understanding between the two people increased after the two nations established diplomatic ties, he said.

China valued ties with Argentina and viewed the country as a reliable partner for both faced the common task of developing national economy and safeguarding world peace, he said.

Jiang was here for a state visit as guest of Argentine President Fernando de la Rua. Argentina is the second-leg of Jiang 's six-nation tour of Latin America.
