Chinese President Stresses Parliamentary Role in Bilateral Ties

Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Monday that the ever frequent exchanges between parliament leaders of China and Argentina contributed to the development of bilateral ties.

Jiang made the remarks in his meeting with Interim President of the Argentine Senate Mario Anibal Losada and President of the Chamber of Deputies Rafael Pascual.

Jiang said that inter-parliament relations constituted an important part of bilateral ties. As both parliament presidents are Argentina's influential leaders and senior politicians, Jiang hoped, the inter-parliament exchanges and cooperation between the two countries would be enhanced under their leadership.

Jiang stressed that Argentina is an important country in South America and its people scored noteworthy achievements in the 20th century in safeguarding sovereignty, developing economy, promoting social progress, and playing an important role in regional and global affairs.

Losada said that Jiang's visit and Argentine President De la Rua's China tour a few months ago demonstrated the same aspiration for closer bilateral ties. The Argentine people admired China's long history and ancient culture, and its unmatched determination and efficiency in pushing forward reform and opening-up, he said.

Commenting on the exchanges between Argentina's parliament and China's National People's Congress, Losada said he hoped the peoples of the two countries would transcend geographic distance, enhance mutual understanding and strengthen communication and cooperation in the new century.

The Chinese president is here for a state visit as guest of Argentine President De la Rua.
