English Reading-guide Section for Party Newspaper

The "Shaanxi Daily", a newspaper run by the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) of Shaanxi Province, recently opened an English reading-guide section on the front page for the convenience of potential foreign readers.

The newspaper, which is published in Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, has become the first Party newspaper in the country to carry an English reading-guide, according to official sources.

Local observers attribute the increase of foreign visitors to this landlocked northwestern province, to the efforts by the central and local governments to accelerate the development of the underdeveloped west China.

Susan, a tourist from the United States, told Xinhua, "If the New York Times had a Chinese guide, it would be good news for Chinese readers."

Official figures show that there are over 6,000 foreign nationals working, studying and living in Shaanxi, while almost one million overseas tourists visit the province every year.
