Foreign-funded Enterprises in Yunnan Register Increasing Foreign Trade

Foreign-funded enterprises in southwest China's Yunnan Province are playing an important role in accelerating the foreign trade of the province, sources with the provincial government said.

Statistics show that the province's 1,960 foreign-funded enterprises reported a foreign trade volume of 190 million US dollars in 2000, 40 percent up from the previous year. The figure accounts for one-tenth of the province's total.

The foreign trade volume completed by foreign-funded enterprises only amounted to 5.1 percent of Yunnan's total during the 1991-1995 period, and the figure for the 1986-1990 period was only 1.6 percent of the province's total foreign trade volume.

Foreign-funded enterprises turned in a record high 619 million yuan (74.57 million US dollars) in revenue last year, up 38 percent from the previous year, according to statistics.

The first foreign-funded enterprise was set up in Kunming, the provincial capital, in 1984. Currently, foreign capital has flown into the sectors of finance, commerce, tourism and mineral exploration in the province.
