Chinese Government Urges More Concern for Mental Health

The Chinese government held a seminar here Saturday to mark World Health Day 2001, which is dedicated to mental health.

At the seminar,officials and experts read President Jiang Zemin 's message to the World Health Organization (WHO), in which Jiang called for the efforts of the whole of society to create a better environment for people with psychological illnesses.

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing also sent a message to the seminar, saying it is crucial to protect the people's mental health.

China is also grateful to the assistance from international organizations like the WHO, and is keen on cooperation with them, said Li in the letter.

A series of activities were also staged in Shanghai, China's most prosperous economic powerhouse, where a large portion of the people are suffering from mental problems of various kinds.

According to statistics, there are currently about 16 million Chinese people suffering from mental problems.
