US Diplomats Meet Spy Plane Crew for Third Time

Approved by the Chinese authorities, US diplomats met, for a third time, early Sunday morning with 24 crew members of the US spy plane that landed on China's Hainan island April 1.

Neal Sealock, defense attache with the US embassy in Beijing, and others visited the crew in Haikou, capital of the island province.

The crew are in good health, Sealock told reporters after the meeting.

The crew members said they understand the current situation and look forward to returning home as soon as possible, Sealock added.

They also expressed gratitude for being permitted by the Chinese side to receive E-mails.

The attache, and Chen Ci, head of the Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Department of Hainan Province, briefed reporters on the meeting at a hotel in Haikou.

"The US side should face up to the facts, adopt a positive and pragmatic attitude and apologize to the Chinese people," Chen said.

"This is essential to the settlement of the incident," the Chinese official added.

Sealock and other US diplomats visited the crew on April 3 and April 6, respectively.

The US spy plane landed at an airport in Hainan after colliding with a Chinese fighter one week ago.
