13 Killed in Gunfights in Kashmir

Thirteen people, including 11 militants and an Indian soldier were killed and seven others injured in gunfights between Indian security forces and Moslem militants in Kashmir since April 6 evening, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported April 7.

Six foreign mercenaries were killed and two Indian soldiers injured in a gun battle which took place after a joint team of local police and Indian security forces launched its operation in Doda district last evening, an Indian official spokesman in the area was quoted as saying.

Indian security forces also shot dead three militants including two Pakistani mercenaries belonging to Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami in two separate encounters and a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the slain militants, the spokesman said.

The PTI reported that Indian army troops foiled two infiltration bids in Poonch district last Thursday, when Pakistani troops opened fire on an Indian post.
