46 Killed in Police-Guerrillas Clash in Nepal

At least 46 people, including 29 police personnel, two civilians and 15 ultra-leftist guerrillas members, were killed early April 7 morning in a police-guerrillas clash in Dailekh district, some 400 kilometers west of here, according to Radio Nepal.

Twelve policemen were injured in the clash, among whom six were in serious condition, Radio Nepal quoted a local police officer as saying.

The guerrillas attacked the police post in Naumule village of Dailekh district, where 72 police personnel were stationed and the cross-fire lasted for more than two hours, the unidentified police officer said.

This is the second major attack at police by the guerrillas within one week. At least 38 policemen and 10 guerrillas members were killed in western Nepal on April 1, when the guerrillas launched major attacks at police posts.

More than 1,650 people, including policemen, guerrillas members and civilians, have been killed in the guerrillas-related clashes since the guerrillas launched armed activities in 1996.
