Greene Looks to Lower 100m World Record

Maurice Greence started his outdoor season in Austin, Texas on April 7, hoping to lower the 100m world record in the year.

Winning an invitational 400m relay, Greene, together with Jon Drummond, Bernard Wilson and Curtis Johnson, timed in 37.88 seconds, the fastest time in the world of the year but 0.48 seconds short of the world mark of 37.40 set by the United States in the 1992 Olympic Games.

Greene, who teamed with Drummond and Wilson for the US Olympic gold-medal team in Sydney, shocked the crowd in Texas in 1995 when he won the 100m with a wind-aided 9.88 seconds, upsetting Carl Lewis.

"This meet has always been good to me," said 26-year-old Greene.

Greene, who holds the 100 world record of 9.79 seconds and an Olympic champion, said that he wants to lower his mark this year, targetting at 9.76 seconds.

"My coach says I can run 9.6. I think I'm on the pace to break the record, so that's what I'm focusing on. I'm expecting great things out of myself," said Greene.
