NW China Setting Up Sapling Breeding Bases

Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has initiated a major environment protection project to build a tree breeding base in the Yellow River area.

With a total investment of 100 million yuan (about US$12 million), the project is expected to build 47 tree breeding bases across the region, totaling an area of 9,363 hectares.

The bases will turn out more than 600,000 kg of sapling seeds annually, according to a local forestry department official.

At the same time, local scientists will carry out a series of research projects to develop afforestation and tree breeding technology.

The project is aiming to provide seeds and saplings for the region's campaign of returning farmland into grassland and forests, the official said.
