Domain Name ".net" Wins Popularity

The world's largest domain name registrar Network Solutions Inc. said Friday that the newly created Internet domain name ".net" has received enthusiastic welcome from Internet users around the world over the past few weeks.

Arthur Chang, managing director of the Asia Pacific division of Network Solutions, told Xinhua that the number of applications for registration with ".net" domain name has been growing rapidly.

Network Solutions, a subsidiary of VeriSign Company, has been authorized to manage the registration of such popular domain names as ".com," ".org" and ".net" by ICANN, the world's top managing unit of Internet domain names.

Chang, who is here attending the on-going 5th China International Electronic Commerce Summit, said that ".net" won the favor of companies and individuals because it offers a greater choice.

Many famous brand names worldwide have had legal and financial troubles to win back similar ".com" domain names registered by somebody else on the Internet. Meanwhile, ".org" does not suit the needs of companies or websites that are not nonprofit. Therefore, ".net" has become a favorable choice for them, said Chang.

Chang said that now 2-3 domain names are registered every second through the worldwide network of his company, which has so far registered a total of 400 million domain names.

He predicted that if everything goes well, the ICANN will adopt seven new domain names by the end of this year, namely, ".aero," ". biz," ".coop," ".info," ".museum," ".nam" and ".pro."
