China to Monitor Water, Soil Erosion in Yangtze River DeltaChina is building a network to monitor the water and soil erosion problem in the Yangtze River delta, using remote sensing technology, the global positioning system and a geographical information system.Sources with the Yangtze River Water Resources Committee, an organization under the Ministry of Water Resources, said the network is designed to have a better understanding of the situation on water and soil erosion in the delta, and improve decision making. It will help them coordinate efforts to control water and soil erosion in the region from Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze in the east to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the west, where the river originates. The delta is China's most important agricultural and industrial belt and home to several hundred million residents. China has been using such information technology as an early- warning system and remote sensing to monitor the water and soil erosion situation in the region, which is often subject to devastating flooding in flood seasons. |
