Russia Urges Europe to Form New Collective Security SystemRussia on Friday called for establishing a new collective security system in Europe, involving Russia and free from blocs under the OSCE aegis and out of the U.S. control."To form a new collective security system free from blocs under the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) aegis and NATO's domination is a key task for the European countries," Leonid Ivashov, head of the Russian Defense Ministry's department for the international military cooperation, told a joint session of representatives of the Russian parliament and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly here. Russia regards the enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a danger to its security, Ivashov said. NATO's interference in other states' internal affairs in evasion of the U.N. Security Council is also an irritant, he stressed. The U.S. striving to dominate the world prompts the desire of some countries to possess nuclear arms, he noted. He urged the European countries to make joint efforts with Russia to ensure the continent's security in stead of depending on the U.S.-led North Atlantic alliance, which has brought so many wars and disastrous consequences to Europe. He said that in the current international situation, dialogue and cooperation are much more helpful to the world security than confrontation and hostilities. On Russia's potential, the general said, it does not endanger any country that does not have aggressive plans. |
