Chinese President Meets With Chilean Supreme Court President

Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin said in Santiago Friday that China has made major progress in law building since it initiated its opening-up and reform and, is working hard to build a socialist country under the rule of law.

Jiang noted that in the process of developing national economy and promoting social progress, China has attached great importance to the law building.

The Chinese president, who is in Santiago on a state visit to Chile, the first-leg of his six-nation Latin American tour, made the remarks during a meeting with Hernan Alvarez Garcia, president of the Chilean Supreme Court.

He said that Chile has lots of good experience in law building, which are worthy learning.

Jiang also said that over the past 30 years since the set-up of their diplomatic ties in 1970, the two countries have seen great headway in the friendly cooperation, an increase in mutual visits and exchanges of personnel including those from the judicial departments and the rapid development of cooperation in economy and trade.

Expressing his hope that the two nations further increase the exchanges in all fields, he said that China is willing to work together with the Chilean government, parliament and judicial departments to boost the friendly bilateral relations of cooperation in an all-round way.

Alvarez said that Chile has attached great importance to Jiang' s visit because the Chilean people have deep friendly feelings toward the Chinese people and admirations for China's long history and the hardworking and courageous Chinese people.

He expressed his satisfaction over the fruitful and effective contacts and exchanges between the Chilean Supreme Court and its Chinese counterpart, saying that Chile and China share much more common languages as the two countries are the coastal ones of the Pacific.
