China to Enjoy Expanded Net Ad Market

A report released Friday predicted that with the development of the Internet, China will witness an expanded net advertisement market.

The report, released by the China E-Commerce Association and eTrustChina.com, predicted the 2004 net ad market scale at one billion US dollars, accounting for five percent of the total advertisement volume in the year.

"Internet advertisement will continue to be an important part of the income for websites," said the report.

The Internet has become a major ad media, following the traditional TV, newspapers and outdoor facilities. Although venture capital is turning against dotcom companies, the demand for net ads is increasing in China, according to the report.

Well-known gateway websites, such as sina, sohu and netease, are the major targets of ad clients. The latest statistics from the three websites show that in the fourth quarter of 2000, the income from net ads accounted for more than 80 percent of their total income.

The report admitted that there are some drawbacks in the Internet ad industry, noting that major Internet ad clients are representatives of the new economy, such as computer-related companies and websites. Traditional industries have paid little attention to the new media, the report pointed out.

Besides, advertising agencies and ad market research companies have also lagged behind in the development of the Internet, according to the report.
