Security Crucial for E-Commerce: Summit

Security has become the top issue affecting the expansion of e-commerce in the world, according to sources from the ongoing Fifth China International Electronic Commerce Summit.

Zheng Yuqing, executive president of Symantec Information Technology Limited, which produces Norton AntiVirus software, said at the summit Friday that a number of factors are threatening the security and consumer confidence of e-commerce, including hacking, virus, frauds and loopholes in internal management within companies.

Vice-President Zou Wei of Founder Digital Limited of China said at a forum on e-commerce security during the four-day summit that there is no technology that can guarantee 100 percent security of on-line transactions. It is important to find a balance between security and the usability of the e-commerce system, he said.

Founder Digital has put forward "SHARKS" solution based on the PKI system, an electronic authentication system that has been recognized by the law of the United States. Its FireGate technology of fire wall can detect hacker attacks automatically and requires no work of man, thus having little impact on operation of the e-commerce system by users.

Zhou Qi, a lawyer from Beijing, said that technology is not the only answer to the question of on-line security. He said that China should facilitate the rapid growth of e-commerce in the country by adopting rules and laws on e-commerce as soon as possible.

Xu Jie from the Construction Bank of China said e-commerce has made the financial sector increasingly transnational. As a result, only those who provide the safest and most convenient service for customers will survive worldwide competition.
