China Post to Become Major Player in E-Commerce

China Post will adopt a series of measures this year to speed up the development of e-post, Deputy Director of the State Post Bureau Wu Shixiong said Friday.

The measures include upgrading the postal computer banking network and initiating electronic remittance business, said Wu in a paper presented to the on-going Fifth International E-commerce Summit.

The move indicates that China Post is taking hold of the opportunities arising from the burgioning new economy and strive become a major player in e-commerce.

In March last year China Post announced that it would enter the area of e-commerce, targeting to set up a comprehensive e-post network comprising an information platform, a e-banking system and a logistics network.

Wu said China Post has advantages in developing e-commerce, with its network of banking cards--"green cards," and a traditional mailing network.

China Post will build an ISP connecting system in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong this year and extend the e-business from Beijing to other large cities across the country.
