China Claims Three Berths in Women's Singles Semis at Japan Open Badminton

Chinese women shuttlers claimed three positions in the singels semi-finals at the Japan Open badminton tournament on Friday.

When Zhang Ning and Zhou Mi had easy wins in the quarter-finals, third seed Gong Ruina met a tough challenge from Thailand's Sujitra Eakmongkolpaisarn and needed one hour 40 minutes to score a 13-11, 10-13, 11-9 victory.

Zhang Ning and Zhou Mi knocked the last Europeans out of the women's singles field, while Kaori Mori kept local hopes alive by upsetting fifth seed Wang Chen of Hong Kong 11-8, 5-11, 11-1.

On Saturday, Gong will play Zhang, the winner over joint fifth seed Julia Mann of England 11-9, 11-4. Second seed Zhou made quick work of Mette Sorensen of Denmark 11-4, 11-2 for a place against Mori.
