China Made Headway in Protection of Endangered SpeciesThis year marks the 20th anniversary of China's accession to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Full Text of the Convention, http://www.cites.org/eng/disc/text.shtml). For its commemoration, the State Administration of Forestry (SAF) held a conference Thursday in Beijing.Over the past 20 years, China has made much headway in the protection of the endangered species of wild fauna and flora. With deep concern for human beings, society and the future, China committed itself to the said convention in 1981 and has been carried it out in an earnest way ever since. In 1992, the government put the strategy for sustainable development onto the agenda and made it a fundamental national policy for economic and social development, and thus paved the way for the protection of wild animals and plants in accordance with the convention. Today, the related law and rules have been worked out to enforce the administration of protection work. Moreover, SAF has set up a special sector engaging in the nationwide work of protection. So far, 14 rescue and breed centers and 400 resource bases for rare wild animals and plants have been set up in China. By PD Online Staff Yin Zhili
