Indonesian Newspapers Criticize US Attitude towards Plane Collision Incident
Suara Karya, an Indonesian newspaper, issued Thursday an editorial on the US military surveillance plane bumping into a Chinese fighter, criticizing the US government for its attitude towards the incident.
The editorial said that the US public is worried about President Bush's lack of experience in handling foreign affairs, fearing that this would trigger an incident in foreign affairs.
The fear has been proved by the incident of US spy plane's collision with a Chinese fighter, it added.
Shortly after the occurrence of the incident, the US government claimed that the US plane is America's territory and that Chinese citizens may not board the plane without permission.
Then US President Bush alleged in a tough tone that China's delayed permission of US officials to meet with the crew does not comply with diplomatic practice and does not conform to the aspiration to develop good bilateral relations.
The editorial also noted that Bushes allegation might be viewed as a threat to stop good Sino-US relations.
It also refuted Bush's remark that China's attitude is not in line with diplomatic practice.
It asked��"What would US react if China sent a plane over America's coastal waters for surveillance�� "
It answered ��"The US would certainly force the Chinese plane to land and would not return it to China before having a thorough inspection. It is, therefore, absolutely reasonable for China to take such a measure."
In conclusion the editorial said the world is waiting anxiously for what attitude the US government will adopt. If the US government insists on selling sophisticated weapons to Taiwan, the world will probably enter in the second Cold War period and the US will only become the instigator of conflicts across the world.
The suara pembaruan newspaper, an evening paper in Jakarta, yesterday asked the question in an editorial: Why US surveillance planes make flights over China's territorial waters?
The editorial said that signs have shown that the Bush Administration pursues a policy different from the Clinton Administration and President Bush intends to keep a distance from China.
The editorial said, "If Washington ignores the pursuance of the friendly foreign policy and China, an Asian power that should be respected, the already tense Sino-US relations will be aggravated further."
