Beijing to Spare One Week for Science, Olympic Bidding

Beijing will hold a science and technology week May 16-22 in an effort to popularize science and support its bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

The theme of the week will be "Science, Civilization and Bidding for the 2008 Olympics". More than 10,000 activities will be held in some 100 bases for popular science in the Chinese capital.

A theme exhibition about the Olympic Games, and science and technology, and an evening gala featuring science, civilization and Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympics will be arranged during the week.

Some Beijing-based academics and scholars from overseas will be invited to participate in the week-long programs.

Attendees will be able to attend a forum on popular science, watch Chinese and foreign documentaries about science and technology, and take part in scientific health-giving exercises.

One million Beijing residents are also expected to take part in a talent show designed to popularize scientific knowledge.
