State Councillor Meets Taiwan Buddhist MasterChinese State Councillor Ismail Amat met Thursday with Buddhist Master Shih Wei Chueh from Taiwan.Ismail Amat said that the freedom of religious belief has been firmly guaranteed on the Chinese mainland, whose current religious situation has been widely acknowledged as the best ever in Chinese history. He also said that religious circles have made great contributions to social progress on the mainland. To assure the freedom of religious belief, people must draw a clear distinction between religion and evil cults which are absolutely anti-humanity, the councillor said, while condemning the notorious evil cult of Falun Gong. On the recent visit to Taiwan by the Dalai Lama, he noted that no matter what pretext the visit takes, the collaboration between the forces for the "independence" of Taiwan and Tibet is doomed to fail. The Buddhist circles in Taiwan and the mainland can be traced to the same origin, and have played an active role in promoting cross-straits communications, he added. The state councillor also hoped that Taiwan Buddhist circles would work harder to promote the peaceful reunification of the motherland. Master Shih Wei Chueh arrived here Wednesday as head of a Taiwan Buddhist delegation to conduct religious exchanges with their mainland counterparts.
