Mortar Shells Fired at Jewish Settlement in Gaza Strip

Four mortar shells were fired overnight at the Netzarim settlement in the Gaza Strip, but without causing injuries, Israel Radio reported on Wednesday.

Israeli army opened fire at the location where the mortars were presumed to be launched, the radio said.

The incident occurred after Israeli helicopter gunships and tanks raided Palestinian targets Wednesday night in retaliation for mortar attacks on the Atzmona settlement in the southern Gaza Strip Tuesday afternoon, in which a Jewish baby boy was injured.

The Palestinians said that 70 people were injured in the Israeli raids.

Israeli army officials have expressed belief that the Palestinians have set up a factory in the Gaza Strip to manufacture mortar shells, and that the plant has a large quantity of explosives, Israeli Army Radio reported.

The officials also voiced fear that the moves to attack Jewish settlements by mortar shelling may spread to the West Bank, the Army Radio said.
