China Promotes Birthplace Protection SystemFrom today on, every drop of Maotai, a world famous Chinese liquor, will come from its birthplace, southwest China's Guizhou Province. It is the original product's birthplace and is protected by the China State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (CSBTS). The birthplace protection system, an international custom, stipulates that only within certain geographic area can the products be manufactured. "The implementation of the system will play an important role in protecting Chinese cultural legacy, improving products quality and sharpening their competitive edge. Meanwhile, the system can increase domestic revenue and fight against the counterfeiting products." said Li Zhonghai, vice director of the CSBTS. China's long history and unique natural environment have cultivated many qualified products. In recent years, Chinese people have shown increasing interest to promoting their products using international standards. Experts pointed out that the birthplace protection system has been practiced for hundreds of years in foreign countries, while in China, it just started with only three recognized products. "We are confident with the system. So many qualified Chinese products will compete in the international market after our examination," according to Liu Zhaobin, director of Department of Policy, Legislative Affairs, Publicity and Education with CSBTS. He said that the system will be used across the nation. Over 20 famous products will pass the examination this year. |
