CPPCC Slams Japan's Pro-Militarism Textbook

"Written lies can never cover up the bloody facts that the Japanese militarists had launched an extremely barbaric and cruel aggressive war in China.

Nobody can deny the monstrous crimes committed by Japanese militarists in China."

These were said by a spokesman of the Subcommittee of Foreign Affairs of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Wednesday.

The spokesman reiterated the Chinese government's stance on the 2002 history textbooks written by Japan's rightist scholars that have been approved by the Japanese government.

The CPPCC subcommittee and all parties, groups and individuals are very indignant and have accused the Japanese government for its neglect of the serious and righteous stance of the Chinese government and its approval to publish the textbooks, according to the spokesman.

Like previous activities by Japanese rightists to tell lies about the history of the Japanese Aggression, the textbook incident has once again hurt the feelings of Asian people, including the Chinese people, and poisoned the atmosphere of trust between peoples from different nations in Asia, he noted. It may also misguide the younger generation in Japan and thus lay a severe hidden danger for the future of Japan, he added.

The Japanese government is obliged to stop the growth and spread of militarist forces in Japan and must not appease and connive for the expansion of the rightist forces, he said.

The spokesman strongly demanded the Japanese government to follow the principles in documents jointly signed by the two governments and take substantial and effective measures to eliminate the bad impacts of the textbook issue and prevent the occurrence of similar incidents in the future.

Japan should prove its sincerity in correctly recognizing and facing the history of the aggressive war, he said.

Chinese People Condemn Japan for Revising Textbook

The people of this Chinese city, where invading Japanese troops massacred 300,000 people during the 1940s, today condemned Japan for its revision of a school history textbook.

"It is not an academic issue nor a historical one, but a serious political issue," said Meng Guoxiang, an expert with the Nanjing Massacre Society, at a seminar.

Sheng Hong, a historian, said that the textbook has totally denied and distorted the historical facts, and the Japanese government's approval of the textbook has sent out a dangerous signal.
