Water Way Blocked by Sunk Vessel Cleared in Shanghai
The main waterway of the Huangpujiang River in Shanghai has been cleared and reopened to traffic, with the refloatation of the container vessel that sank on March 28.
Officials at the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration said two containers of highly poisonous pesticide on board Guangyuan No. 9 were also retrieved.
However, search for two of the 54 containers on board is still going on.
The "Guangyuan No. 9" collided with another container vessel " Xianghong" on the late night of March 28 and sank immediately. All 12 members of the crew were rescued.
Officials said this is the most serious marine accident on the river in recent years. The sunk vessel and containers also posed a threat to large vessels sailing on the river.
The Administration soon mobilized its rescue team and took prompt measures that prevented pollution to the river.
Officials from the Administration blamed the "Guangyuan No.9" for the accident, saying that the outgoing vessel should be on exit water way but veered to the entrance way to surpass a small vessel, and collided with the "Xianghong" due to misoperation in an attempt to avoid bumping into it.
