Cuban President to Visit Iran for Closer Relations

Cuban President Fidel Castro Ruz is due to visit Iran later this year, aiming at strengthening bilateral ties, the state IRNA news agency reported Tuesday.

Preparations for the visit have been made, but its exact date has not been set, IRNA said, quoting Cuban Vice-President Carlos Lage Davila.

In a meeting with a visiting Iranian parliamentary delegation, Lage said that the visit will reciprocate Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's Cuba trip last September, and pave the way for the further promotion of bilateral cooperation.

Lage reiterated that the exchange of visits between leaders of the two countries over the past few years has indicated the interest of both sides to expand ties in various areas.

Both Iran and Cuba have successfully resisted the U.S. expansionist policies and pressures, he said, adding that Iran-Cuba cooperation could set a model for developing countries.
