China's CMC Vice-Chairman Meets Australian FM

China's Central Military Commission (CMC) Vice-Chairman Zhang Wannian Tuesday met with Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer in Canberra.

Zhang said that China and Australia enjoyed good bilateral relations in the years after the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1972.

Since Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited Australia in 1999, the bilateral ties have remained good momentum of growth in all fields.

On the Taiwan issue, Zhang appreciated Australia's position of sticking to the one-China policy.

With regard to the issue of human rights, Zhang said that on the basis of the principle of equality and mutual respect, the two countries will achieve more in enhancing common ground and expanding cooperation.

Downer said that Australia-China ties are in the best stage since the two countries established diplomatic relations.

With the good relations in areas such as trade, economy and investment, the two countries have established important cooperation partnership, Downer said.

He said good cooperation between the two countries benefits not only the two peoples but also peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific region.

Downer also reiterated that the Australian government will continue to adhere to the one-China policy.
